Know What Your State is Doing

Charter school programs vary from state to state. The state law may different on a variety of issues including:
  • The types of charter schools allowed;
  • The number of schools allowed;
  • The length of the charter; and

The US Charter Schools Web site has compiled this and other basic information into a database of profiles that surveys the charter schools programs in every state.*

These profiles may be helpful for:
  1. Learning more details about your state’s charter school program including:

    -A brief overview of basic charter facts

    -Contact information to the state Department of Education’s charter school office, charter school resource centers, and other support providers

    -The state’s charter school law

  2. Gaining a broader understanding of the movement across the nation; and

  3. Comparing and contrasting the wide spectrum of charter school programs from state to state.

To view your state’s profile and/or to survey the charter school programs in other states, please visit our Interactive Map on the State Information page.

* Though we provide information about charter activity in every state, including the District of Columbia (DC) and Puerto Rico (PR), only 41 entities (39 states, DC, PR) have passed charter laws.
