'> A copy of Indiana's charter school law (Indiana Code 20-24).

Amendment(s):   not available

Authorizers:   The Indianapolis Mayor's Office, Ball State University, and three school corporations: Carmel Clay School Corporation, Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation, MSD Steuben County

Length of charter:   The length of charters in Indiana varies. Indiana Code 20-24-4-1 states that a charter cannot be gra

Caps on number of schools:   Yes. There are no caps on the number of charter schools that may operate across the state, but the Mayor of Indianapolis may approve no more than 5 charters during 2001-02, a number which increases each year by five. The cap provision of the Mayor of Indianapolis is still in effect. The limit of 5 schools per year is cumulative, however. The Mayor has not approved 5 charters in any one year since the cap was put in place. Charters available but not granted roll over to the next year.

Funding:   Charter schools in Indiana do receive 100% of the per-pupil funding that traditional schools receive, but they do not receive funds for capital projects or transportation. They are also exempt from some state grants that are determined by the school corporation’s assessed valuation.
