Amendment(s):   Recent legislation provides for the authorization of up to 15 "urban high school academies" that may be authorized and located in the City of Detroit. Under that legislation, Public Act 179 of 2003, those "urban high school academies" would be authorized for initial terms of 10 years with subsequent renewal terms of 10 years. That law is being challenged in the Michigan courts.

Authorizers:   local school boards, intermediate school boards, community college boards (within their service areas), and state public university boards

Length of charter:   There is no current legal limit on the length of the authorizing charter for most charter schools.

Caps on number of schools:   There is a cap on the number of charter schools that may be authorized by public state universities. That cap, of 150, remains in effect and the maximum number of schools that may be chartered by state public universities was reached several years ago. There is no cap on the number of charter schools that may be authorized by local school districts (LEAs), community colleges or intermediate school districts.
