Law:   Ohio Legislation for Charter Schools (referred to as 'Community Schools' in Ohio)

Authorizers:   Major sponsors include the State Board of Education, the Lucas County Educational Service Center, and the Ohio Council of Community Schools.

Length of charter:   5 years

Caps on number of schools:   Through July 1, 2005, there is a cap of 225 schools. After that time, the cap expires and an unlimited number of schools may open.

Funding:   A community school is funded:
  • by the state through per-pupil foundation payments;
  • by additional funds from grants, government and private services;
  • by state start-up grants for developers with preliminary agreements;
  • by the Public Charter Schools Grant Program through the US Department of Education.
