Under that legislation, Public Act 179 of 2003, those "urban high school academies" would be authorized for initial terms of 10 years with subsequent renewal terms of 10 years. That law is being challenged in the Michigan courts. That cap, of 150, remains in effect and the maximum number of schools that may be chartered by state public universities was reached several years ago. There is no cap on the number of charter schools that may be authorized by local school districts (LEAs), community colleges or intermediate school districts.
