  1. service to the lost children
    05/28/2003 20:59:02 pennie wood
I have worked in the education field for 7 years as a program assistant to mild;moderate;emotionally handicapped children and am burned out by the school system I work for. The need for a school that would be geared to special needs kids that do not fit in the "inclusion" scenerio. The parents are frustrated and these kids have the right to be taught not merely academics but be given functional tools to be welcomed into society. I want to give these kids this opportunity, and I can prove that I have the ability to serve their needs. Any advice, who to contact. Time is ticking.

  7. Charter School Networking in Indianapolis
    02/12/2002 11:44:06
Are there networks or systems set up to connect people who are
interested in forming charter schools in Indianapolis and the
surrounding areas? I have had several years working with and developing
alternative schools and I would like to become involved in the charter
school movement. Are there people out there who need my kind of
    experience?

communities & promote scholarship in the humanities for
    teachers at all levels.

seminars & institutes in the summer of 2002

    ======================================================

Each summer the National Endowment for the Humanities supports a
variety of study opportunities in the humanities for school
teachers. Seminars & institutes are national (open to those who
teach American K-12 students), residential, & rigorous. Designed
to strengthen the quality of the humanities instruction available
to American students, they are led by some of the nation's
outstanding scholars & take place at major colleges &
universities & archival facilities across the country & abroad.

Topics considered among the 28 seminars & institutes for school
teachers offered during the summer of the year 2002 include
Vietnam, the Arab world, Classical philosophy & culture,
Shakespeare, & a wide range of topics in American history &

The listings contain seminar & institute titles & the means to
contact each director. Prospective applicants can request
information from as many seminar & institute directors as they
wish but may apply to only one NEH summer offering. In response
to a request for information, seminar & institute directors will
send a letter describing the content, logistics, expectations, &
conditions of that project. Each letter will be accompanied by
application instructions as well as information about the
program's costs. Participants receive from the National
Endowment for the Humanities a stipend based on the length of the
seminar or institute. Year 2002 stipends are $2,800 for four
weeks, $3,250 for five weeks, & $3,700 for six weeks & are
intended to help cover travel costs & living expenses, as well as

Applications to Conduct an NEH Seminar or Institute
    in Summer 2003
National Endowment for the Humanities (U.S.A.)
    Application Deadline: March 1, 2002
    ===================================================

Each summer the National Endowment for the Humanities supports
faculty development through residential seminars & institutes.
These projects are designed to provide teachers from across the
nation with the opportunity for intensive study of important
texts & topics in the humanities. Seminars & institutes are
intended to foster excellent teaching by encouraging collegial
discussion of humanities topics within close-knit scholarly
communities. They also promote active scholarship in the
humanities in ways suited to teachers at all levels from grade
    school through college.

Now is a good time to begin drafting a proposal to direct a
seminar or institute, or to contact a colleague whom you think
might be interested in developing a project. The NEH is
supporting 28 projects for school teachers & 23 for college &
university faculty in the summer of 2002. You may find lists of
these projects on the NEH website at
    http://www.neh.gov/projects/si-school.html (school teachers) &
    http://www.neh.gov/projects/si-university.html (college &
university teachers). If you or your colleagues would like to
apply to offer a seminar or institute in 2003, please be in touch
with one of the NEH program staff listed below to discuss your
application. Program staff can answer questions, discuss current
program emphases, provide samples of successful applications, &
comment on an informal draft. Staff can help anticipate
questions that are likely to arise in the review process.

The application guidelines can be found on the NEH website at
    http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/seminars.html. If you have
any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to call on
the staff at the NEH Division of Education Programs. For general
questions, call Joyce Ferguson at 202-606-8463 or Jean Hughes at
202-606-8471, or contact one of the program officers listed

  10. Info on charter school facilities
    11/03/2001 04:39:57 Joe Nathan
The US Dept. of Education asked the Center for School Change to do a report on small schools and shared facilties. We have compiled a multi-color report showing how outstanding charter and district public schools are sharing space with other organizations - colleges, social service agencies, apartment buildings, etc. etc as a way to improve services to students and make the best possible use of $.
The report is available free on the web at www.centerforschoolchange.org - click on "Smaller, Safer, Saner Successful Schools." Or you can get a hard copy by contacting the National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities - www.edfacilities.org The on-line version is free, the hardcopy is $10.

    Hope this is useful.
