Legislative SummaryFlorida's yearly cap on the number of charter schools varies by the population of a district. Charter schools are limited to no more than 28 in each school district that has 100,000 or more students; no more than 20 charter schools in each school district that has 50,000 to 99,999 students; and no more than 12 charter schools in each school district that has fewer than 50,000 students. Local boards and state universities are the primary charter approving agencies. Schools operate under a 3-year term, a 10 year term or a 15 year term and are funded comparably with other public schools. Florida's charter schools are automatically waived of most education laws and regulations but must specify student goals consistent with state goals and high school graduation requirements. They must participate in the state writing assessment, national normed testing, and high school competency assessments.
