| Legislative Summary | Pennsylvania's charter school law was passed in 1997 and was further amended in 2002 specifically regarding cyber charter schools. There is no cap on the number of schools or the number of students that can be enrolled. Local school boards, or a group of local school boards, are the granting agents. Charter terms are 3-5 years, renewable for 5 years. Charter schools are funded by a formula based on the previous year's district expenses, usually receiving 75-80% of what school districts spend per child. Charter schools must participate in the state assessment system.
