| Legislative Summary | Louisiana's charter law allows 42 charter schools in the state, in four distinct types, which are well-described on the state department's charter school web page above. Charters can be granted either by a local school board, state board, or both. Eligible charter school operators include teacher and local citizen partnerships, public service organizations, businesses, college or universities, any LEA, and faculty or staff of any city or parish organization. Charter terms are 5 years, and funding is comparable to other public schools, except for Type II schools, which receive the state foundation allotment only. Charter schools must follow state-mandated graduation requirements and assessments.
