Legislative SummaryMichigan's charter legislation allows an unlimited total number of schools to be granted by local school boards, intermediate school boards, community college boards (within their service areas), and state public university boards (up to 150 schools by 1999). Michigan charter schools, called public school academies, are not automatically waived of state education laws and regulations. Schools operate under terms of up to 10 years, with mandatory review at least every 7 years. Their funding is capped at the statewide average, and their students must take state assessments.
