Authorizers:   Local boards and state universities are the primary charter approving agencies.

Length of charter:   3, 10, or 15-year terms

Caps on number of schools:   No cap for conversion charter schools. Yearly cap for start-up charter schools varies by the population of a district. Charter schools are limited to no more than 28 in each school district that has 100,000 or more students; no more than 20 charter schools in each school district that has 50,000 to 99,999 students; and no more than 12 charter schools in each school district that has fewer than 50,000 students.
