Twenty charter schools in Michigan, 11 percent of the state's total, received the state's Golden Apple awards for their strong 2002 performance on the state's assessments, the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). About half to nearly 75 percent of Michigan charter schools increased their scores in most grades and subjects tested on the MEAPs.
