




Twelve studies find that overall gains in charter schools are larger than other public schools; four find charter schools’ gains higher in certain significant categories of schools; six find comparable gains; and, four find that charter schools’ overall gains lagged behind traditional schools.

Twenty charter schools in Michigan, 11 percent of the state's total, received the state's Golden Apple awards for their strong 2002 performance on the state's assessments, the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). About half to nearly 75 percent of Michigan charter schools increased their scores in most grades and subjects tested on the MEAPs.
