By: Cornell-Feist, Marci

Focus Area:  Governance & Management

Abstract:  This Issue Brief identifies some of the key characteristics and qualities of effective charter school founding boards and offers suggestions about how the charter school authorizing process can set boards up for success from the very beginning. The author recommends that authorizers seeking well-governed schools develop a charter school application process that ensures that the founding board is prepared to govern for what really matters; has the skills and expertise to govern; has the structures in place to support effective governance; and, demonstrates clarity of roles and responsibilities.
