Abstract:  This study examines charter school performance and the effect of charter competition in New Jersey from 2000 to 2006, focusing on schools with fourth grades. The author finds that while charter schools tend to have lower performance levels than traditional public schools on fourth grade standardized tests, charter performance improves as the schools gain experience.
