Abstract: Using over ten years of school-level longitudinal data in Michigan, this paper explores the impact of charter competition on student achievement and tests the hypothesis that competition from charter schools improves the efficiency of traditional public schools. The author finds that charter competition has an increasingly negative impact on student achievement and school efficiency in the state's traditional public schools.
