Detroit Charter Schools Growing

Abstract:  Detroit school children have been fleeing to charter schools away from the city's other public schools. According to a new census report, the number of Detroit children attending public schools grew from about 180,000 in 1990 to about 193,000 in 2000. However, enrollment in Detroit Public Schools fell to about 171,000 in 2000. In 1990, all of Detroit's public school children attended the city school district. By 2001-02, more than 19,000 students were attending charter schools in Detroit, with another 18,000 students from southeastern Michigan enrolled in suburban charters.
