Charter schools in Dayton, Ohio mostly matched strong gains in test performance by district schools, even outperforming the district in some areas. Charter schools had better passing rates on 10 of the 12 state tests for reading and math. More charters (45 percent) made AYP than district schools (28 percent). Dayton district schools saw improvement as well. The district's overall gain in performance index score over last year was second best among Ohio's eight largest urban districts. "All sorts of public schools are now competing to show academic results. And area children, whether enrolled in charter schools or Dayton Public Schools, are reaping the benefits," said Terry Ryan of the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, a charter sponsor.
