The percentage of Ohio charter schools rated in continuous improvement, effective or excellent more than doubled to 44.5 percent this year. Of the 295 charter schools that received a rating, 30 are rated excellent; 16 are effective; 87 are in continuous improvement; 46 are in academic watch; and 81 are in academic emergency. Over 15 percent of the 295 rated charter schools rated for the 2005-2006 school year were placed in the top two categories. That compares to 10.7 percent of the 130 charter schools that received a state rating for the 2004-2005 school year. Allison Perz of the Ohio Council of Community Schools said the results are encouraging. "I think our focus this year has really been on getting schools to understand the importance of data-driven decisions," she said. Enrollment at charter schools has grown from 2,200 students at 15 schools to 72,000 students at about 300 schools since the first ones opened in Ohio in 1998.
