The Ohio Department of Education will soon launch an evaluation process for sponsors that examines how sponsors handle poor-performing schools. Sponsors that fail evaluation could see the number of charter schools they sponsor reduced or be subject to other sanctions. The new process also will restrict a school on probation, suspension or termination from changing sponsors. "Without question, the expectation would be to place on probation any school failing to meet the expectations of the sponsor," said Todd Hanes, Ohio's executive director for community schools. Charter school sponsors in Ohio can be school districts, universities or nonprofit groups and each can manage up to 50 charter schools.
