Columbus Public Schools are expected to notify 1,384 private- and charter-school students that they cannot ride the bus to school this year. "There will be a number of families who have benefited from CPS transportation in the past who will not be offered school-bus transportation," said Eric Pinkett, the district's transportation director. Last year, the district provided rides for 1,180 private-school students, 1,511 charter-school students and more than 25,000 of its own students. It operates 490 of its own buses and contracts with private operators to operate 113 more. Thousands more would have lost bus transportation if bell schedules had not been altered and routes redrawn. Families will receive a $172 check toward the cost of providing transportation to school.
