A new organization, called the Ohio Alliance for Public Charter Schools, plans to push for policies to hold poor-performing charter schools accountable, provide services to help good charter schools open and operate, and help schools share information and best practices. Andy Smarick of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is helping the Ohio group to get ready to launch officially in September. "There are some great schools in Ohio, some mediocre charter schools in Ohio and some not so-great charter schools that have continued on, lingered on," he said. Meanwhile, the National Association of Charter School Authorizers will be hosting workshops to help sponsors improve their monitoring skills. "The quality of charter schools as a whole in Ohio is going to depend on sponsors doing a good job overseeing the school," said Greg Richmond, president of the association. "It can only lead to better schools for kids."
