Ohio has been a national leader in bringing online schools (also known as e-schools and cyber schools) to public school students. At least 20,000 students statewide now take all their classes online. Charter schools still lead online schooling in the state, but now 36 Ohio school districts have started e-schools. District-run e-schools enroll about a quarter of the state's online students. District leaders see it as a way to bring additional funding and lure back students from charter schools. In its first year, Berea district's online program lured back about 40 students who had left for charter schools. Lakewood City Academy, the district charter school overseeing Lakewood Digital Academy, has brought back more than 110 students.
