The United Federation of Teachers in New York says it has received 800 applications for 12 staff openings in its elementary charter school and 761 applications for 15 slots in its new secondary charter school. Union President Randi Weingarten said the large number of resumes suggests teachers are disenchanted with working in the city school system. "What this says is that good educators are really unhappy with the way they are treated by the school system," she said. "I think teachers see that we're trying to have high standards and a collaborative and respectful relationship with staff and parents." The schools are the only charter schools in the country run by a union.
