Three teacher unions in Ohio -- the Ohio Education Association (OEA), Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT) and Ohio Association of Professional School Employees -- have said they are interested in gaining charter school teachers as members. Charter teachers would be a financial boon to the unions. For example, if all of the state's 3,900 charter teachers chose the OEA to represent them, they would pay out more than $1.6 million in dues. Terry Ryan of the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation said he wonders whether the real motive is to make charter schools look more like traditional public schools. A premise of charter schools is that, in exchange for the freedom to hire, fire and reward teachers as they see fit, schools should perform well. "Collective bargaining makes all of that, if not impossible, a whole lot harder," Ryan said. "One can't help but wonder if that doesn't mean the death of the charter school ideal."
