Nine charter schools in Connecticut want to increase enrollment by a total of 449 students next year, but the request is tied up in state budget negotiations. Competing proposals to amend the state budget provide more charter school seats, but the funding varies markedly. The governor proposed an additional $1.7 million in funding to the existing $24 million budget. That translates into 215 extra seats at the current per pupil funding rate of $8,000. The legislature is proposing about $4.2 million in additional funding, or 524 seats. Once the funding is approved, the state Department of Education would review the application for expansion. Jack Hasegawa of the state's educational equity division said schools that want to expand significantly would need to demonstrate their success. This year, 14 charter schools are operating in the state.
