In the past five years, intense competition in Dayton, Ohio for students from charter schools has caused a 20 percent drop in private school enrollment. As a result, five Catholic elementary schools will merge into one this coming fall. The number of Catholic elementary schools in the city will drop from 13 to nine. "It's certainly a dramatic change," said the Rev. John Krumm, who headed a planning committee that led to the merger. There are now 34 charter schools operating in Dayton, enrolling nearly 7,000 students.
