Idaho state lawmakers will soon vote on a bill to raise the state allotment of new charter schools from six to 12 per year. Some education officials are concerned of the financial impact of allowing more charters. "Every time we have more choices in public education, it's a little more expensive," said Bob West, an official with the state's Department of Education. "It's the opposite of consolidation." Sen. Bert Marley said the state charter school system is still shrouded in mystery. "I don't think most people understand it," said Marley, who said he doesn't oppose charter schools but worries about how they'd impact rural counties. Statewide there are 24 charter schools enrolling more than 7,900 students or about 4% of Idaho's K-12 population. Sixteen of these charter schools are authorized by 13 different districts and 8 are authorized by the Idaho Charter School Commission.
