The new chief executive of the NewSchools Venture Fund, Theodore Mitchell, is seeking to raise an additional $125 million to finance charter school expansions, as well as to help finance charter school teacher training and other services. NewSchools Venture Fund is a nonprofit venture philanthropy firm that focuses on accelerating the growth of nonprofit charter school systems, including investments in organizations like Aspire Public Schools, Green Dot Public Schools and Leadership Public Schools. It is still investing its first $80 million, contributed by individuals like John Doerr, who has helped start dozens of ventures, including Sun Microsystems, Amazon.com and Google, and organizations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which gave $22 million. Recently citing William Butler Yeats' famous quote, "Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire," Mitchell said, "we provide the fuel for that fire."
