The Cincinnati Public Schools district has lost thousands of students to charters. In response to the competition, it recently sent a letter to hundreds of parents of students in charter schools in an effort to recruit them to the district. The letter followed news that four charter schools must find new sponsors to monitor their financial operations and academic effectiveness. Another charter was cited by its sponsor for not administering state tests to some students and threatened with closure if it doesn't improve. The recruitment efforts have angered some charter officials, who said they intend to stay open. Kate Bower, founder of Dohn Community High School, issued a press release to contradict reports that her school would close. Officials at Harmony Community Schools posted information on a digital outdoor sign informing parents and students that it would not shut. "I had kids in droves asking questions," said Harmony Principal Deland McCullough.
