Five Dayton Catholic elementary schools will merge into one next year, under a plan proposed by Catholic school leaders December 1. This year the five schools enroll 902 students, down from 1,029 last year. A 28 percent drop is expected once the schools combine, but enrollment is expected to stabilize at 650 and eventually increase. Catholic and other private schools in Dayton have seen a 20 percent decline in enrollment over the past five years in the face of changing demographics and intense competition from the city's 33 charter schools.
