A recent survey of 1,001 Ohioans by the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation finds that citizens are concerned about the state of education and support standards and some forms of school choice. "There is profound frustration with the state's K-12 education system and the cry for leadership is loud," said Fordham's Dayton-based vice president, Terry Ryan. In theory, Ohioans like charter schools: The majority of those surveyed liked the concept of giving individual schools more flexibility, control over their budgets and ability to pick their teaching staffs. But they opposed the idea of charter schools being "free from many of the rules and regulations traditional public schools face." Despite the increasing number of charter schools in Ohio, approximately one-half of those surveyed admitted they knew "very little or nothing at all" about charter schools.
