Toledo Public Schools Superintendent Eugene Sanders, an outspoken critic of Ohio's charter schools, has interviewed for a job overseeing the development of up to 15 charter schools in Detroit. The Skillman Foundation is conducting a national search for an executive to oversee the non-profit New Schools of Detroit and any charter schools it may open. A foundation official confirmed that Sanders had interviewed and said "We are interested in him." Charter supporters are not the only ones surprised by the interview. Francine Lawrence of the Toledo Federation of Teachers said, "It should not be possible that someone who is seeking to run a group of charter schools be superintendent of Toledo Public Schools," she said. "To me, the two are not compatible, and not the kind of leadership we need." The Skillman Foundation hopes to announce its choice by the end of the year.
