Teacher unions around the nation are seeking to recruit charter school teachers through various strategies, but some are finding that teachers aren't interested in or want to terminate membership. Less than two years after overwhelmingly voting to unionize, teachers at the Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School in Philadelphia changed their minds. On September 9, teachers voted 20-5 to dissolve their bargaining unit. The vote was scheduled after a majority of the teachers signed a petition saying they no longer wanted union representation. Contract talks had begun in January 2004, but negotiations did not produce an agreement.
