Charter school supporters in Ohio are pushing to access more tax revenue. In Ohio's funding system, every district is guaranteed a minimum funding amount per child, which is about $5,500. That figure is split between direct state aid and locally collected taxes. When a student enrolls in a charter school, only the basic state aid amount is transferred from their home school district to pay for their education. Any additional local taxes remain with the district. Last week, the Fordham Foundation released a study that argues that the over 30 percent funding gap between regular and charter schools is unfair and should be filled. Chester E. Finn, Fordham's president, said the data collected in the report suggests Ohio’s charter schools have grounds to challenge the unfairness of the funding system in court. Charter opponents say charter schools receive what they were promised under the 1997 law that created them and have no right to claim more funds.
