As many as 16 Cincinnati school buildings soon might be for sale if the local school board takes advantage of a temporary loophole in state law permitting districts to sell them to private developers before selling them to charter schools or at a public auction. Previously under Ohio law, school systems first had to offer surplus buildings to charter schools before selling them to other entities. As part of the new state budget, school systems have until Dec. 31 to offer the schools for private purchase. The school system, which approved its building project in 2002, always had planned to close, sell or demolish surplus buildings, but residents are voicing their concerns of bringing in private developers. "What concerns me is that the green space is space that a lot of the neighborhood uses, especially children," said Ken Jones, who lives across the street from one of the schools which may be offered up for sale to developers.
