As Columbus, Ohio district schools are losing ground on high school tests, charter schools are showing increasing strength. According to recent test results, several charters outperformed the district on the new Ohio Graduation Test. Local charter operators and parents say charters are refining their programs, and offering smaller classes and greater family engagement. A Columbus spokesman said that the district is feeling the effect of competition with charters and that officials are paying close attention and working with KidsOhio.org to research why parents and students are leaving the district for charter schools. Charters in Columbus seem to be outperforming some charter schools in other communities in the state. Based on statewide averages, traditional public schools outperformed charter schools on all five portions of the exam.
