The new Idaho Charter School Commission held its first meeting on July 21, and was immediately faced with a backlog of charter school petitions and the need to define some ambiguity in how the new state legislation defines its responsibilities. "We are in a very preliminary understanding, to find out what we can or can't do. And, there are some ambiguities in the law that authorizes our existence that we need to sort out," said Commissioner Marianne Donnelly. "There is a lot of work yet to be done." In addition to hearing and granting charter school petitions, the charter school commission will oversee the schools chartered through their jurisdiction to make sure they meet accountability and state standards. Luci Willits, a State Board of Education spokesperson, said following the meeting, "Some charter schools have had an antagonistic relationship with their school districts, they are kind of brow-beaten. The commissioners had a can-do attitude. They were open minded and non-confrontational."
