As part of its efforts to boost K-12 education, Arizona State University plans to build one K-12 public charter school near each of its four campuses. The first charter opened last year in east Mesa, and the second one opened this month in downtown Phoenix. University leaders say the initiative will allow strong alignment with its research agenda. The plan calls for educational innovations to be developed at the schools and then filtered throughout Arizona. ASU researchers will gauge different ways of teaching at the public charter schools, whose teachers will be on year-round contracts so they can be trained in the teaching reforms. Unlike teachers in traditional schools in the state, the public charter teachers will spend six weeks a year on professional development and 90 minutes a day planning.
