A week after announcing that KIPP Harbor Academy in Edgewater, Maryland would close because it could not find a suitable facility, its leadership voted 3-2 for the school to remain open. The decision to keep operating, which thrills families but was objected to by its principal, appears to keep the school from becoming the first among 52 KIPP schools to close because of lack of space. The school is still faced with finding answers to the questions of: Where will the school operate? Who will be its principal? And who will staff it since 10 of the 12 teachers have found new jobs? "We have two teachers and one staff person. ... We're in a very difficult position," said Steve Mancini, a spokesman for KIPP.
