Troops-to-Teachers

What is the purpose of this program?
Defense Activities for Non-Traditional Support (DANTES) assists eligible members of the Armed Forces to obtain certification or licensing as elementary school teachers, secondary school teachers, or vocation or technical teachers, and to become highly qualified teachers. The program also helps these individuals find employment in high-need local education agencies or charter schools.

How can these funds be used?
The program provides stipends of up to $5,000 to eligible participants who agree to obtain certification and teach for at least three years. In addition, the program helps these individuals find employment in high-needs LEAs or public charter schools. A "high-need LEA" is an LEA that has a poverty rate of at least 20 percent or serves at least 10,000 poor children and has a high percentage of teachers teaching out of field or with emergency credentials.

In lieu of the $5,000 stipend, DANTES may pay a $10,000 bonus to participants who agree to teach in high-need schools in high-need LEAs. A "high-need school" is a school where at least 50 percent of the students are from low-income families or a large percentages of the students quality for assistance under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

What are the eligibility requirements?
Former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including members of the Armed Forces Reserves, can apply. In general, applicants must have a baccalaureate or advanced degree, and:
· Have retired from active or reserve service.
· Have separated from the service after six or more years of continuous duty and be willing to enter the reserves for at least three years.
· Be currently serving in the reserves and have at least 10 years of active and reserve service and be willing to commit to continuing in the reserves for at least three more years.

Note: please refer to section 2303 for additional eligibility requirements and 2303(c) for the selection criteria.

What is the application or allocation process?
Applicants must apply to DANTES for assistance. Individuals interested in receiving assistance should contact DANTES at: http://proudtoserveagain.com
