Lori, When I use that term I mean assessment that has students apply skills and understanding in real life situations. Examples are project/problem based work, portfolios and senior projects, producing products and making written, oral and electronic presentations. The knowledge or skill is assessed in a real life way and when these are juried and not "graded by the teacher," students get feedback on how professionals in the real world assess the understanding and skill they possess. I don't believe that it replaces more traditonal methods of assessment, but I also don't believe the traditional methods are adequate to really judge how well a person knows something.
