It is hard to remain small and survive financially. This is especially true if you are in a state where the per pupil funding sits way below the average public school. So, what can one do? I, as the administrator, spend many hours on grant proposals and nurturing relationships with area banks and corporations. I also keep abreast of state and federal opportunities for additional funding. Bottom line, our salaries are low but we provide health insurance (80% paid by the school) and do pay in to the state teacher's retirement fund. We also operate in a very relaxed atmosphere where students and staff are on first name basis and casual dress prevails. Class size kept to 14 allows for a variety of lessons and interactions with students. If being small is important and state assistance is lacking then the environment of the school has to go a long way to compensate for lower salaries.
