What great line of questions. Charter schools have been very skilled at tapping into hero's but retaining hero's is a huge challenge. I am not so sure that money is the only answer. In the current system, money entices teachers out of the classroom and into the central office, which is clearly not the right answer. However, there comes a time when other commitments--most often family--override any possible financial carrots. I like the idea of rethinking the role of teachers and perhaps rewarding skilled teachers with opportunities to reflect and share their skills. In higher education faculty take sabbaticals and I know that some private schools offer sabbaticals. A potential carrot for a strong teacher might be a sabbatical to observe and train other teachers.
