We can't really talk about improving public education without talking about improving teacher training programs. Alternative certification programs are a piece of the puzzle but higher education and specifically Ed. schools must evolve to reflect the changing public education scene. Most of my work has been related to studying special education and I am continually frustrated by the fact that we expected general and special education teachers to teach all students yet we don' prepare teachers to teach all students. Rather, we prepare general education teachers and special education teachers as if they are going to teach in different environments. Then, when they get into public schools we are surprised by the fact that it is so difficult for all teachers to have ownership for all students. This is just one example of where Ed. schools are not adequately preparing their graduates. We need entrepreneurial Ed. schools run by strong leaders who are going to develop education programs that reflect the environment in which teachers are going to work tomorrow.
