Yet again, a benefit of the charter school movement rises to the surface!
I really enjoy studying my current population, determining a need and then providing instruction and/or activities to meet that need. Most of the time my assessment has been correct, but not always. Sometimes I have misinerpreted a teaching technique, at other times a timeframe etc., etc.
The most important benefit has been the demonstration of problem solving skills with my students, including not giving up on the "first try". My students tend to come from families with poor problem solving abilities, whether they are wealthy or poor. "Plan B" is a common occurrence and "Plan L" our record!
Without risk taking I would not have my highly successful mentoring-apprenticeship program, therapy dog training class or police beat up-date program.
And, of course, there are those classes that I will NEVER (probably) offer again.
