Some of the best charters in the country - Vaughn Next Century in southern California comes to mind - have worked out arrangements with Colleges of Education so that Vaughn staff are helping prepare the next generation of teachers.
This probably is not something a charter can take on in its first 2-3 years.
But it is a very valuable approach for a school that has been around a while.
Our surveys of educators all over the country show, for example, that many teachers do not feel well prepared on how to work with families - a critical part of a school.
So part of the medium to long term vision of a school may include helping prepare future teachers.
Part of a short-medium term vision may be to work out collaboration with universities so that the universities are helping in a variety of ways, that can include
* cooperative in-service
* writing grants together
* student teachers and interns from universities
Reactions welcome.
