What to teach? 6/10/04 8:01 AM
Author: Gail Srebnik View Thread

I love this topic! I have described my view of curriculum (for years) as organic curriculum. I argue with our state each year and refuse to submit standard curriculum guides. Instead we have drafted proficiencies and we link our courses to these and make sure that students see, hear, and feel the connections we are making in day to day teaching with these essential proficiencies. The Curriculum model is linked to our graduation requirements and culminates in seniors producing a portfolio that shows they have mastered these skills. Each year as a staff we consider the individual students and work to mold our courses to fit them. For example: one of my teachers likes to do a Pop Music History Class but some years he doesn't have the student body (of Juniors) that have an interest and the class would just drag. We now wait and see what our groups look like and then he decides if this section should be offered or another one put in its place. I feel that as part of a school choice movement we have to reflect our differences in not only our approaches to teaching but also our view of curriculum.
