Roger has pointed out that teachers often don't come to us in the charter schools fully developed. This can be a good thing if we commit ourselves to the necessary professional training and sharing, utilizing more adept teachers as mentors. Our school uses the CREDE research-based Seven Standards for Effective Teaching, and the teachers learn to observe and evaluate each other, thus developing self-evaluating skills as well as commraderie with each other. There are many great models that can be used, but developing collegiality among our teachers and principals is essential. Because of more limited resources in our charter schools, this takes real discipline, but the payoffs in educational terms are real.
