Carole (and any one else who is interested),
Wow! It sounds as if you have thought through what your students are learning, and that is terrific. Often, charter schools seem so busy with the start-up details (understandably since there are so many of them!), that "what will we teach" gets left aside until the school is up and running. I think "what will we teach" should be one of the first questions when opening a new school, and a continued part of the conversation after the school is running.
I work with many start up charter schools across the country. (Primarily elementary and some middle schools as well.) An central part of our conversations revolve around what to teach the students, and the Core Knowledge Sequence provides a strong foundation for the type of subjects you are teaching in high school to prepare them for success and beyond. I am so proud of the hard work and dedication to student achievement that I have seen across this country. Next week's conference will be an exciting venue to continue this conversation about teaching, learning, and student achievement.
I wonder what other elementary and middle school charters choose as the foundation for their curriculum? (above and beyond state standards, of course!)
